“You’ve Changed.” They Said. “We’re Supposed To.” I Answered.

I’d be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every time a person has looked me in the eye and said these words over the last ten years.

While some are afraid of the tiniest wobble to the axis that holds their world together, I thrive on change. I continually look for ways, not to improve, but to push out from what I’ve already experienced.

My life is a storybook of change. From a corporate lawyer, life coach, writer to a Camino guide living in over four different countries, I love to feel the wobble of my world from time to time. I could go through a long list of small changes I’ve made but it won’t make any difference. My jobs and places I’ve lived speak for themselves.

What’s the alternative? To live a static life built on the past experiences that keep us safe. What is safe? Really, when you think about it. What is safe about staying the same.  What if we really are here to change and grow, again not to improve, but just to grow and bloom in ways we never thought possible. To challenge ourselves whether through new hobbies, new friends, new ideas or routines. Even picking up a book by a different author is a way to make a change.

Living a life filled with change doesn’t mean you have to lose stability. Safety and stability are entirely different concepts. Stability is something that can be attained by taking care of the basics of life. Safe is staying in your comfort zone, afraid of anything new.

How do you know if you are playing it safe? Staying safe is the equivalent of living a flat-line life. Boredom, apathy, agitation, depression all follow.

Don’t be afraid of change, my friends. Don’t be afraid to hold on to your hat and sail in the breeze of the unknown whether you pick up a new hobby, book, job or home. I know one thing for sure. When this life of mine is over. I won’t have any regrets for living life to the fullest.
