She Took a Leap of Faith and Built Her Wings on the Way Down
Many things prevent people from taking leaps of faith to change themselves and their lives for the better. Fear is one of them, and fear of failure can have most of us quaking in our boots at the prospect of making BIG changes!
This fear is a common reason why people struggle to try to take leaps of faith, transform their lives and follow their dreams. The word failure itself is seen as a negative.
You may be surprised to know that in Chinese culture, failure is seen as a positive as they believe that failing means that you have tried, which is highly valued. Alas, this is not followed in the Western world, and to fail is most definitely viewed as a negative. Yet, if this perception were to change, more and more people would go after their dreams without fear of criticism from others.
You may have heard the saying “got to be in it to win it”, but a personal favourite of mine is “If you don’t ask, the answer is already no. If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t step forward, you are always in the same spot”. If we allow a fear of failure to prevent us from taking leaps of faith to follow our dreams, and we don’t take steps to make them a reality, then our fear of failure has caused us to fail!
When we treat a failure as a step on the road to success, it holds enormous potential. When we fail, we are in effect learning how to succeed. An example of this is Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb. He failed 1999 times before he succeeded. If he had given up at the first, the tenth, the hundredth or the thousandth time, we might not have electric light bulbs today. He persisted until he got it right, using every failure as a step towards his own goal. In his own words, he described this experience as “I am not discouraged because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward”
So, if a fear of failure is stopping you from achieving your dreams, change your perception; see a true failure in not going after what you want by non-action. You already have the no by non-action, with belief in yourself, together with will and determination, the no just might turn into a yes!
